Joan Painting

I fell in love with painting in my 1st painting class in Dallas, Texas where I grew up. I was 19. I applied to Pratt Institute where I spent the next 4 years as an Interior Design major, taking fine art classes on the side. Over the years, I continued painting as I pursued busy "art-related" careers. While working in New York as a designer, I completed an MFA at NYU Graduate School of Film and Television. I then worked for 20 years in the film industry and as a musician and songwriter for a theater company.

But painting was where I found calm, play and sustained passion. I love how painting transports me into heightened awareness and enables me to "see". Watercolor is my favorite medium. It's the abstract shapes in nature that attract me most. And spending time outdoors is glorious.

In 1995 I moved away from the "busy career world". I left New York for Philadelphia and began working for myself, both as a Painter and Organizing Consultant. As I helped people organize their homes and offices to create simpler lives, I myself was creating a simpler lifestyle with more time both to study art and paint outside with friends. In 2004, I moved to the town of Ashland in Southern Oregon which is not only a beautiful area for painting but also a wonderful arts community.  I live with my partner David Lorenz Winston who is a talented photographer and our miniature poodle Kali.
